On Wednesday 25th June, Anni Sanders our Assembly Supervisor accompanied Jo Cloute our HR Manager to Glenleigh Park Primary Academy & Nursery. It was Focus SB's first visit to a primary school and for many of the students aged 9-11 this may have been their first contact with a manufacturer from a local factory.

The fun session included a ‘Spin the Wheel’ activity which helped students gain an understanding of factory work. During the activity the pupils were encouraged to ask Anni and Jo about jobs at Focus SB, assemble a socket and packing box and explore the skills involved in manufacturing. This wasn't timed, allowing the children to see the different elements involved in assembling a product.

We also discussed productivity, including how many sockets they could make in an hour and how much they would get paid, which seemed to interest them. Students used our toy forklift to pick up a box on a pallet and place it on racking. We used this task to explain that Anni drives the real version, unloads lorries, and faces risks. Some students were very careful and did well, while others bumped into things, hit the racking, and dropped the box. This allowed us to highlight the need to follow health and safety and also that damaged goods cost a business time and money.

The pupils expressed how much they enjoyed using our remote-control forklift and making our goods and learned that whilst these tasks require skill, they can also be fun and rewarding.

It was a fantastic day of learning and fun, giving students insight into factory work. Everyone that took part got a lollipop!
