Iconic 22 Parkside - Renovation And Conversion

Focus SB was selected to manufacture and supply all the electrical accessories for this recently renovated iconic property.

This address is famous amongst architects as the inspiration for the Pompidou Centre and was influential in the development of the modernist movement in architecture.

Tucked away in the leafy London suburb of Wimbledon, the property was designed by world renowned British architect Lord Rogers as a home for his parents in 1968, and is built with the extensive use of steel, glass and bold use of bright colour blocks.

Lord Rogers went on to design some of the most iconic buildings in the world including the Lloyd’s building, Millennium Dome, Heathrow Terminal Five, and of course the Pompidou Centre in Paris, perhaps his most critically acclaimed project.

In 2013 the prefabricated single-storey property was gifted by the Richard Rogers Charitable Settlement charity to Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (GSD), providing a resource for students studying architecture. Rogers said: "The house will be a gift to Harvard for the training of doctorates in the field of architecture – my charity is giving it to them.”

Following its donation, the Grade II* listed property underwent a thoughtful refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory, and to create a functional space for the Harvard students.

Focus SB was selected because of its ability to manufacture in-house, enabling the design of bespoke electrical accessories to match the style of interior, whilst bringing all the modern conveniences into the building.

Products supplied for the project included:

  • Ambassador Classic power sockets in Primed finish which were matched to the relevant accent colour used on the walls.
  • Architrave Switches in Satin Chrome finish for lighting control; essential in places due the building's unconventional construction.
  • Custom plates manufactured in Satin Chrome for entry and security systems.
  • Matt white painted flat metal (Ambassador Classic) socket plates with USB.
  • Various bespoke data and power outlets to match other plates.
  • Bespoke plates with engraved labelling.

The refurbishment was managed by Gumuchdjian Architects. Focus SB has a long and successful relationship with this architecture practice, and worked closely with lead architect Michael Ramwell to specify and deliver the required electrical accessories. Michael commented: “We have used Focus SB for many of our prestige projects over recent years. We are always impressed with their ability to deliver exactly what we need in a timely fashion. Their team are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and the products are second to none.”

Focus SB’s sales manager for London and the South East, Barry Partridge, added: “22 Parkside is an iconic building for students of modern architecture, so it was a pleasure to be involved in the refurbishment. The entire sales team are used to dealing with architects, designers and specifiers, helping them add value, usability and style to any project.”
